10 Creative Uses for Cookie Dough

June 21 is National Cookie Dough Day in the United States. Here in Australia, we may not celebrate this delicious dough, but that couldn’t stop us jumping on board. Our team pulled together ten creative uses for cookie dough.

Beloved by all ages, cookie dough is celebrated for its soft texture and yummy flavours. Whether you’re sneaking a spoonful from the mixing bowl or crafting a gourmet dessert, cookie dough offers endless possibilities.

  1. Ice Cream: Mix chunks of cookie dough into vanilla ice cream for an irresistible dessert.
  2. Truffles: Roll cookie dough into bite-sized balls, dip them in melted chocolate, and let them harden for a yummy soft n’ crunchy texture.
  3. Brownies: Spread a layer of cookie dough on top of brownie batter before baking for a rich and indulgent dessert.
  4. Stuffed Cookies: Wrap cookie dough around a piece of chocolate, caramel, or a marshmallow for a gooey surprise inside.
  5. Cookie Pizza: Press cookie dough into a pizza pan, bake it, and top with frosting and various candies or fruit for a fun and colorful dessert pizza.
  6. Cheesecake: Fold chunks of cookie dough into cheesecake batter before baking for an indulgent dessert few can resist.
  7. Cookie Dough Popsicles: Mix small pieces of cookie dough into a creamy popsicle mixture and freeze for a cool, tasty treat.
  8. Dough Sandwiches: Spread cookie dough between two baked cookies for a double cookie delight.
  9. Sweet Dip: Make an edible cookie dough dip to serve with pretzels, fruit, or graham crackers for a party-friendly snack.

Tips for Safe Consumption

It’s important to ensure that cookie dough is prepared safely to avoid any health risks. Here are some essential tips to help you enjoy your uncooked cookies worry-free:

Use heat-treated flour: Raw flour can sometimes contain harmful bacteria. To make it safe for consumption, you can either buy heat-treated flour or treat it at home by spreading the flour on a baking sheet and baking it at 175°C (350°F) for 5-10 minutes. Let it cool completely before using.

Choose pasteurized eggs: Raw eggs may carry salmonella. Opt for pasteurized eggs or egg substitutes, which have been heat-treated to kill any potential bacteria, making them safe to eat raw.

Opt for egg-free recipes: Many edible cookie dough recipes are designed without eggs, using alternatives like applesauce, yogurt, or flaxseed meal to achieve the right consistency and flavour.

Store properly: Keep your cookie dough refrigerated and consume it within 5 days. For longer storage, you can freeze cookie dough for up to three months.

Hygiene first: Always wash your hands, utensils, and surfaces thoroughly before and after handling raw ingredients. This helps prevent any cross-contamination that could lead to foodborne illness.

Buy Edible Cookie Dough: If you’re not up for making your own, consider buying edible cookie dough. These are typically made with heat-treated flour and without raw eggs.

Did you know? The love affair with cookie dough began long before it became a trend. But, it wasn’t until the late 20th century that cookie dough truly began to shine. With the rise of safe-to-eat raw dough made without eggs and heat-treated flour, it rapidly increased in popularity.
